Why achieve net-zero?
Recent data indicates that wastewater treatment plants are responsible for approx. 2% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions -this is equivalent to the emissions of global air traffic. The EU has set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 (European Green Deal). In Germany, the Federal Climate Protection Act is in force. Wastewater treatment is assigned to sector 5 (waste management and other). This sector needs to reduce its emissions by at least 55% by 2030, from the current 9 milion t to 4 milion t CO₂ equivalent.
